June 23, 2009 – It begins

Today we left for Milan. It was a nine-hour flight. Pretty decent flight. British Air is a lot more hospitable than American! Got to watch Gran Torino, which was really good, and fell asleep in Twlight…twice. Once we got to Milan we went to our shanty of a Holiday Inn. 190 euro for one night. Middle of NOWHERE. We sat in the bar and had a drink around six because the restaurants don’t open until 7:30. Bummer. While we were there we met two German pilots and got to chatting. They are kind of contract pilots and fly when they are called out. Apparently they get to fly to some really cool places, but they can also get stuck in places like the middle of nowhere in Milan with us. Without a car, the group of us (Germans and Americans) walked down a major highway to the only restaurant in the area. It was a big pizzeria that looked like it turned into a nightclub/pub after dinner. The food was good and the Germans were very entertaining. The pizza I thought I ordered had cheese on it, the pizza I received had some kind of tomato sauce and olive oil put through the oven. Regardless, it was very good. We bought a bottle of wine at the restaurant and took it back to the hotel for enjoying. They let you take drinks with you out of the restaurant, like to-go style. It is weird, but surprisingly convenient. The wine and olive oil here are just fantastic. I want to bring some olive oil home with me but it is really hard to transport. Enough about Milan though, off to Greece!
